Privacy policy
Last updated: 16 October 2026
This policy covers the 2AM Calls website (2amcalls.online) and the 2AM Calls Sync browser extension. In short: there are no accounts and no ads, we keep only what a room needs while it is open, and our usage statistics are anonymous counts without cookies.
What we handle
- Your display name, which you type when you create or join a room. Others in the room see it.
- An anonymous ID, a random code saved in your browser so you keep your place (host role, "already let in") when the page reloads. It isn't linked to who you are.
- Room details: the room code, its optional password, the link being watched and the playback position (play / pause / time) so everyone stays in sync.
- Chat messages and emoji reactions. They are passed straight to the people in your room and are not saved on our server.
- Voice and video. Calls go directly between the people in the room (WebRTC, encrypted). When a direct connection isn't possible they pass through a relay (TURN) server run by Cloudflare, still encrypted, so the relay can't see or hear them. We never record calls.
- A tab marker: a random code for each browser tab, so the same person isn't let into a room twice from two tabs (you'd hear your own voice). It is forgotten when the tab closes.
What stays on your device
- Noise cancellation runs inside your browser, on your own computer. Your microphone sound is cleaned up there before it is sent to the others; it is never sent to us or to anyone else for processing.
- Talk detection (the glowing border around whoever speaks, and lowering the movie while someone talks) also runs in your browser, from the call sound you already receive.
- Your settings are saved in your browser only: your name, the sound mix (movie and call volume, "lower the movie while people talk"), the noise cancellation level, the microphone and camera you picked (by their name), light / dark theme, and the room you're in so a reload brings you back.
What the extension does on websites
- It adds the 2AM Calls sidebar to the page and finds the page's video, so it can play, pause and seek it together with your room and report the playback position.
- It shares the address of the page you're watching with your room only when you send it there (for example with the sync button), so the others can open the same page.
- It notices when a page fails to load ("not found", no response) so it can bring you back to a working page.
- It runs the call in a hidden page of the extension, so the call keeps going when a website reloads or you move between pages.
- It stores only your current room, name, anonymous ID and layout preferences in the browser, so the sidebar can rejoin after the page reloads.
- Right after it is installed or updated, it connects itself to 2AM Calls tabs that are already open (so they don't need a reload), closes the Chrome Web Store tab it was installed from and takes you back to the tab you came from. It doesn't touch any other tab.
- When you press Update on 2AM Calls, it asks the Chrome Web Store for its newest version. This is the same check Chrome does by itself; no personal data is sent.
- It does not read your passwords, form entries, messages or other page content, and it does not collect your browsing history.
Usage statistics
- Website visits are measured with Cloudflare Web Analytics: pages viewed, the site that linked to us, country, and browser / device type. It uses no cookies, doesn't follow you across other websites and doesn't build a profile of you.
- How the app is used is counted on our server: for example rooms created, people joining, calls and cameras turned on, sync and reactions, how long rooms last, the country of the connection, and which video website a room watches (its domain name only, such as "netflix.com"). These are counts only: they never include names, chat, room codes, passwords, full links or IP addresses.
- The extension itself sends no statistics.
- To tell you when a newer extension version is out, our server asks Google's update service (the one Chrome uses) for the version on the Chrome Web Store, a few times a day. This is about the extension only and involves no information about you.
How long we keep it
Room details exist only while the room is open. A room closes after its time limit or a few minutes after everyone has left, and its data is then deleted from our server. Chat isn't stored at all. Anonymous usage counts are kept for up to 90 days. Information saved in your own browser stays there until you clear it or remove the extension.
Sharing
We don't sell your data or share it with advertisers or data brokers, and we don't use it for anything other than running your room. The service runs on Cloudflare (website, rooms, call relay and the anonymous statistics), which processes network traffic to deliver it. The extension is distributed and updated through the Chrome Web Store (Google). Websites you watch on have their own privacy policies.
Children
2AM Calls is not meant for children under 13.
